São Tomé and Príncipe, officially designated the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is an island state located in the Gulf of Guinea. It consists of two main islands (São Tomé and Príncipe) and several smaller islands, with a total area of around 1001 km² and 160 thousand inhabitants. It has no land frontiers but is relatively close to the coasts of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria.
The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were uninhabited when the Portuguese navigators João de Santarém, Pedro Escobar and Edigel Campos discovered them in 1470. Hence, they became a Portuguese colony from the 15th century up to their Independence, on the 12th July, 1975.
