The General Assembly of the United Nations has named 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. In the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the International Year of Sustainable Tourism should boost a change in politics, business practices and consumer behavior, with the aim to achieve a more sustainable tourist sector.
Consequently, the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) has leaded its efforts to adapt each goal and to extract from its principles the objetives on wich tourist agents should work with a view to fulfill the 17 SDGs.
At this moment, with the purpose of enabling international organizations, which have historically played an important role on sustainability, to provide their conclusions, the RTI has organized a set of International Conferences that will lead to the approval of global criteria for measuring sustainability.
The first one of this conferences will take place in Barcelona the 17th, 18th and 19th of May, under the name ‘Sustainable Tourism for Development in the framework of the New Urban Agenda’. Register here
The next one will take place in Arona (Tenerife) and will tackle the topic of ‘Sustainability and Competitiveness in Destinations’ during the days 15th and 16th of June. Register here
Finally, Lanzarote will host another International Conference on 'Sustainability as a key factor of competitiveness in the tourist industry' during the days 19th and 20th of October. Register here
These meetings aim to generate a set of decisive recommendations and to establish precise goals related to the contribution of Urban Tourism, Tourist Destinations and the Tourism Industry to the Global Goals of the United Nations, following the guidelines of the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ST+20) signed in 2015 in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
As part of this necessary awareness on sustainable tourism, the RTI has also launched the campaign #TOURISM17 in order to promote sustainability as a new development model in which we encourage you to participate.(watch the video here)
