The State Government of Guanajuato, Mexico, through the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato, the Responsible Tourism Institute and the municipal government of Yuriria, signed on March 23 the Letter of Commitment 'Yuriria Sustainable Destination - Biosphere Community', in the ex-convent “Agustino de Yuriria”.
The purpose of the Commitment Letter to Responsible Tourism is to recognize the firm commitment of the municipality of Yuriria to move towards a model of tourism development based on the principles of sustainability, cultural diversity and social responsibility, making Yuriria the first Magic and Sustainable Village of the country.
The signature was made by Fernando Olivera Rocha, Secretary of SECTUR of Guanajuato, Jorge Rodríguez González of the Responsible Tourism Institute and Gerardo Gaviña González, Mayor of Yuriria.
Olivera Rocha said that during the certification process, a commitment is needed to learn how to protect the cultural diversity heritage in Yuriria, while taking advantage of it as a tourist resource to generate business.
Rodríguez González stated that one of the keys to achieve sustainable development is to make the economic activity in a sustainable way. Moreover, he said that sustainability is not a static state that we can achieve but a path to be undertaken and in which we must maintain ourselves through continuous improvement.
The Mayor of Yuriria, Gerardo Gaviña González, mentioned that the municipal government is working decidedly to obtain the Biosphere Sustainable Tourism Seal for the Magical Town of Yuriria. Arturo Lara López as president of the Magical Town's Committee of Yuriria, said that this is an important and integral effort, because it includes four essential axes, which are indispensable in any tourist destination: "To have clearly defined a sustainable tourism policy, with the purpose of developing a second axis, which is economic development, as well as conservation and management of cultural heritage and conservation of the environment."
