20th Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards and 3rd Skål Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle Special Award 2021

The announcement of the winners of the 2021 edition of the Sustainable Tourism Awards took place on Monday 20 December during the virtual Skål International Annual General Meeting. This year, exceptionally, the RTI has awarded two Skål Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle Special Awards instead of one.

The Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards, launched in 2002, aim to raise the visibility and give recognition to entities in the travel and tourism industry.

Winners of the Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards 2021

  • Community and government projects: El Jorullo Ecotourism Services, Mexico.
  • Nature and biodiversity: Chai Lai Orchid, Thailand.
  • Education programmes and media: Tourism Industry Aotearoa, New Zealand.
  • Major tourist attractions: The Cape Town International Convention Centre, South Africa.
  • Marine and Coastal Activities: Six Senses Laamu, Maldives.
  • Rural Accommodation: Sardegna Grand Hotel Terme, Italy.
  • Tour operators and travel agents: City Sightseeing, South Africa.
  • Urban Accommodation: The Grand Hotel, Sri Lanka.

The Jury of the 20th Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards

The independent jury was made up of three distinguished and distinguished personalities representing internationally recognised organisations: the Responsible Tourism Institute, represented by Secretary General Patricio Azcárate; PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association), represented by CEO Liz Ortiguera; and Grupo Xcaret, represented by its corporate director of sustainability and international relations, Iliana Rodríguez.

In this edition, the jury has evaluated the 50 nominations received, based on leading sustainability criteria that contemplate tangible and measurable benefits for the environment, business improvement as well as society and the communities in which they operate.
