The Portuguese municipality of Alvaiázere has joined the international Biosphere community of destinations after achieving the Biosphere Certified recognition, highlighting its commitment to sustainable tourism and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The municipality of Alvaiázere, located in central Portugal, is now officially part of the international community of sustainable Biosphere destinations after obtaining the Biosphere Certified distinction. This recognition confirms that the territory has implemented sustainable practices aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating itself into a global network that promotes more responsible, inclusive, and resilient tourism models.
The achievement of the Biosphere Destination certification was made possible thanks to a collaborative and participatory process involving the Ayuntamiento de Alvaiázere, the private sector, and local citizens. This model of territorial governance reinforces sustainability as a strategic pillar for the municipality’s development.
Alvaiázere is an example of how territories can lead a sustainable tourism transformation by balancing economic development, the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, and the well-being of local communities.
Located in the Sicó limestone massif, Alvaiázere stands out for its natural wealth, with landscapes dominated by the Serra de Alvaiázere, the highest point of this mountain range, and by the Nabão and Alge rivers. Part of its territory is included in the Natura 2000 Network, certifying the ecological value of its areas and the need for their conservation.
