Alvaiázere strengthens its model as a sustainable destination in Portugal.

The Portuguese municipality of Alvaiázere has renewed the Biosphere Certified Destination distinction, thus consolidating its position within the international network of Biosphere destinations and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable tourism based on continuous improvement.

The renewal of this certification follows the successful completion of the corresponding follow-up audit, which has verified the correct implementation of the sustainable practices promoted by the municipality. This recognition guarantees that Alvaiázere continues to advance in its commitments and integrates responsible management as a strategic element of its tourism and territorial development.

Granted by the Instituto de Turismo Responsable (RTI), through the Biosphere methodology developed in collaboration with the Spanish network of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Spain–REDS), this distinction evaluates the real contribution of destinations to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a system of verifiable actions and evidence.

A trajectory aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Alvaiázere first joined the international Biosphere destination community in 2025, in recognition of its commitment to a more responsible tourism model, respectful of the territory and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

With this renewal, the municipality continues a trajectory based on planning, continuous improvement, and the protection of the natural, cultural, and social values that define its identity.

This vision is also reflected in its Responsible Tourism Manifesto, a document that goes beyond a simple statement of intent to become a true roadmap guiding local policies and actions toward a more conscious tourism model, respectful of the community and connected to the municipality’s identity.

Nature, heritage, and the Camino de Santiago as defining features.

Located in the district of Leiria, in the Central region of Portugal, Alvaiázere is a municipality where the rural landscape is one of its main tourism assets.

Its territory is shaped by karst terrain, extensive green valleys, and waterways that create a natural environment of great environmental value. This landscape heritage coexists with an identity deeply linked to limestone, visible both in traditional architecture and in numerous elements of local heritage.

Culture, traditions, gastronomy, and rural lifestyle complete a tourism offering that invites visitors to discover the territory through authenticity, respect for nature, and connection with local communities.

This is complemented by its connection to the Camino de Santiago, one of Europe’s great cultural routes. Beyond its historical and spiritual dimension, the Camino today represents a slower, more conscious, and respectful way of traveling through the places it crosses.

In Alvaiázere, this connection enhances the municipality’s appeal for those seeking to explore the territory on foot, discover its rural landscapes, and engage with its natural and cultural heritage from a perspective aligned with the principles of sustainable tourism promoted by Biosphere.

A destination that turns sustainability into a way of managing the territory.

The renewal of the Biosphere Certified Destination distinction demonstrates that sustainability is part of Alvaiázere’s management model and not a one-time action.

The municipality continues to advance in a tourism strategy aimed at protecting its natural heritage, preserving biodiversity, and reinforcing a local identity closely linked to the landscape and rural life.

Its landscape richness, the quality of its natural spaces, and the preservation of its traditions make Alvaiázere a destination that is committed to generating opportunities for the local community through responsible tourism, capable of creating value without compromising the resources that make the territory unique.

This approach makes it possible to move toward balanced development in which nature, culture, well-being, and economic activity coexist under a shared strategy of responsible management.

A recognition of the work carried out and a boost to continue moving forward.

At Biosphere, we would like to congratulate its entire technical and human team, as well as the entities, businesses, and local community that are part of this collective project, for successfully renewing the Biosphere Certified Destination distinction.

The successful completion of the renewal audit highlights the effort made in recent years to integrate sustainability into destination management and demonstrates the municipality’s ongoing commitment to a tourism strategy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

This renewal does not represent an endpoint, but rather a new step within a process of continuous improvement that will allow Alvaiázere to continue strengthening tourism based on heritage conservation, protection of the natural environment, well-being of the local community, and the creation of authentic experiences for visitors.

In this process, the involvement of the local business community is essential. The renewal of the destination can also serve as an incentive for companies in Alvaiázere to incorporate verifiable best practices and progressively join the path that can lead them to obtain the Biosphere Certified distinction for businesses. This tool would allow them to strengthen their competitiveness, make their contribution to sustainability more visible, and directly participate in the responsible positioning of the municipality.

With this recognition, Alvaiázere consolidates the path initiated with its certification and advances as a benchmark for sustainable tourism in Portugal, demonstrating that responsible management can help build more resilient, competitive territories better prepared for future challenges.
