Barcelona Biosphere Destination

In 2017, Diputación de Barcelona obtained the Biosphere Destination certification for the territorial tourism brands "“Costa Barcelona”, “Paisajes Barcelona” and “Pirineos de Barcelona” and, together with the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, developed a methodology to guarantee the quality and sustainability of tourism services through the Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism programme.

With this initiative, also called "Compromís per a la Sostenibilitat Turística", the destination has been a pioneer in promoting, together with the Institute for Responsible Tourism and Biosphere, good practices in sustainable management of tourism companies and their recognition through a label for the development of sustainable tourism, from an integral perspective and collective work.

Currently, more than 1,000 tourism companies and services have joined and benefited from this programme since it was launched in 2017 to involve the business fabric in more sustainable management and tourism models, which from 2019 will allow companies from both the city and the counties of Barcelona to join.
