Barcelona, first destination to be awarded Biosphere Platinum status

Barcelona City and the three tourism brands of the province of Barcelona: Barcelona Coast, Barcelona Landscapes and Barcelona Pyrenees, have become the first Platinum destinations within the Biosphere Community, the world's largest international community of destinations and companies aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs of the United Nations.

On 28 June, the ceremony to award the city of Barcelona and the three tourism brands in the province of Barcelona as Biosphere Platinum Destinations took place at the Casa Llotja de Mar in Barcelona, making them the first destinations in the Biosphere Community to obtain this distinction.

The certification is the result of a collaboration between Barcelona Provincial Council, Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Tourism and the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), with the collaboration of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. This initiative has been a great success in the city and the province, and involves the business fabric of the whole territory in its sustainable commitment.

This project is having unprecedented success, mobilising the entire tourism industry of the destination with sustainability, the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs of the United Nations through the sustainable adherence programme of the Diputació de Barcelona, which includes almost a thousand companies from all regions that will receive their Platinum recognition.

The companies adhering to this commitment have also demonstrated continuous improvement in their production and consumption models and their alignment with sustainability, which has also led them to achieve Biosphere certification. For this reason, the ceremony also included the presentation of certificates to the more than 800 companies adhering to the programme, which have managed to demonstrate their good practices in this certification process and system.
