Sustainable tourism in Peru takes a decisive step forward with the incorporation of new players from the hotel sector into the Biosphere system. The hotel group INTURSA has become the first company in the country to join the Biosphere community after obtaining the Biosphere Committed designation for its six hotels. This recognition certifies its genuine commitment to sustainable development and marks a historic milestone for tourism in Peru, reinforcing its progress toward a more responsible, regenerative model aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The advancement of sustainable tourism in Peru has taken a significant step with the incorporation of the INTURSA hotel group into the international community of destinations and companies committed to sustainable development. Six of its hotels, located in key destinations such as Lima, Cusco, Paracas, and the Sacred Valley, have recently achieved the Biosphere Committed distinction, becoming the first hotel group in the country to accomplish this collectively.
This milestone marks a turning point in Peru’s tourism sector, positioning INTURSA as a benchmark in implementing a responsible and sustainable tourism model aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) criteria.
The Biosphere Committed distinction represents the first level within the Biosphere Sustainable certification system, developed and endorsed by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI).
This recognition validates that entities have begun their path toward true sustainable tourism, committing to adopting responsible practices that will positively impact the environment, local culture, and the communities in which they operate. In this case, INTURSA’s six hotels are already working with the Biosphere management tool to develop action plans aligned with the 17 SDGs and move toward Biosphere Certified status.
The six INTURSA hotels that have received the Biosphere Committed recognition are:
Each of them has already begun implementing concrete sustainable actions, with personalized plans that include reducing environmental impact, promoting cultural heritage, improving people’s well-being, and practicing responsible business management. These initiatives reinforce the idea that luxury tourism and sustainable tourism in Peru can go hand in hand.
INTURSA’s integration into the Biosphere system represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen Peru’s positioning as a tourism destination committed to sustainability. This incorporation also reinforces Biosphere’s expansion in Latin America, consolidating a global network of sustainable hotels, responsible tourism companies, and certified destinations that share a common vision for the future.
At Biosphere, we welcome the INTURSA group and congratulate the entire team for their forward-looking vision and decisive commitment to a regenerative, inclusive, and balanced tourism model. This step not only generates value for the industry but also inspires other companies and institutions in the country to follow the same path.
The current context requires transforming the tourism sector into a driver of positive change, capable of generating economic benefits without compromising the environment or local communities. In this sense, INTURSA’s leadership represents a model to follow for other tourism stakeholders in Peru.
This achievement consolidates INTURSA as a key player in building a new tourism paradigm in the region and places Peru on the global map of destinations committed to more sustainable, resilient, and ethical tourism.
The certification process continues. With the Biosphere Committed distinction, INTURSA hotels are now in the active phase of implementing their sustainability plans. The clear goal is to obtain the Biosphere Certified distinction, which validates the effective application of sustainable practices after passing an external audit.
This future recognition will not only strengthen INTURSA’s reputation as a responsible hotel group but will also solidify its commitment to the values of sustainable development and regenerative tourism.
Sustainability is no longer an option—it is a necessity. And in Peru, this path is beginning to take shape with decisive steps. Biosphere’s presence in the country, alongside a benchmark like INTURSA, not only opens new opportunities for transformation in the tourism sector but also invites other entities to join a global community committed to balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being.
This achievement reinforces the shared vision promoted by Biosphere, and we extend our most sincere congratulations to INTURSA for this historic step. The commitment demonstrated by its hotels on their path toward full certification is an inspiring example for the sector. We invite more companies, destinations, and institutions in Peru to take the step and join in building a more conscious, fair, and truly sustainable tourism model.
