Tofino earns Biosphere Certified status for sustainable tourism

A recognition of sustainable tourism in Tofino.

The achievement of the Biosphere Certified certification confirms that Tofino has successfully passed the audit verifying the proper implementation of sustainable practices in the destination. This certification ensures that the local community and its managing entity, Tourism Tofino, are fulfilling their commitments to advance toward a sustainable tourism model that balances economic prosperity, environmental protection, and social well-being.

This recognition reflects the ongoing work of Tofino Biosphere Destination, which since March 2024 has been implementing its sustainable action plan after initially joining the Biosphere Committed program, consolidating a strategy that places sustainable tourism at the center of its development.

Tofino, a sustainable destination in the heart of Canadian nature.

Known for its ancient forests, golden sandy beaches, and vibrant ecotourism offerings, Tofino is an iconic destination for those seeking to connect with nature. Its diverse landscapes and commitment to environmental preservation have made it a benchmark for responsible tourism in Canada.

The municipality stands out for its collaboration with local organizations that promote ocean protection, drive sustainability and community development projects, and foster inclusion and diversity. These initiatives reflect the destination’s holistic vision—a community committed to sustainable and inclusive tourism that generates real benefits for people and the environment.

Responsible tourism and commitment to the SDGs.

The Biosphere methodology of the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) aligns with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), serving as a global management tool for destinations seeking a balance between environmental, social, and economic sustainability. With this achievement, Tofino joins other destinations on Vancouver Island and in British Columbia that also hold the Biosphere Certified designation.

This collaborative approach is allowing Tofino to establish itself as a sustainable and regenerative destination committed to innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

The local community as the driving force of sustainability.

The traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, where Tofino is located, is recognized for its biodiversity and natural beauty. This exceptional environment has been preserved thanks to the leadership and responsible management of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, whose ancestral knowledge has been key to maintaining the balance between tourism and conservation.

Tourism Tofino works closely with these communities and with more than 250 local businesses, promoting projects in circular economy, accessibility, and environmental responsibility that strengthen the social fabric and enhance the destination’s appeal.
