This recognition reflects the ongoing work of Tofino Biosphere Destination, which since March 2024 has been implementing its sustainable action plan after initially joining the Biosphere Committed program, consolidating a strategy that places sustainable tourism at the center of its development.
Known for its ancient forests, golden sandy beaches, and vibrant ecotourism offerings, Tofino is an iconic destination for those seeking to connect with nature. Its diverse landscapes and commitment to environmental preservation have made it a benchmark for responsible tourism in Canada.
The municipality stands out for its collaboration with local organizations that promote ocean protection, drive sustainability and community development projects, and foster inclusion and diversity. The Biosphere methodology of the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) aligns with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), serving as a global management tool for destinations seeking a balance between environmental, social, and economic sustainability. With this achievement, Tofino joins other destinations on Vancouver Island and in British Columbia that also hold the Biosphere Certified designation.
