On November 28, 2025, the Jameos del Agua will once again become the stage for a historic gathering. The 2025 World Conference on Sustainable Tourism will bring together leaders, institutions, and international experts to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1995 World Charter for Sustainable Tourism and update its principles in response to the sector’s current challenges.
This international event is driven by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Turismo Lanzarote, the Center for Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote, and the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI). Together, they are working to once again position Lanzarote at the global forefront of sustainable tourism.
The program of the 2025 World Conference on Sustainable Tourism includes lectures, debates, and roundtables on the sector’s most pressing challenges and the innovative solutions being implemented in destinations and businesses worldwide. Key topics include the management of overtourism, the importance of transparency and trust in sustainable tourism, and the opportunities offered by innovation and regeneration.
The day will begin with the opening ceremony and institutional speeches, featuring meteorologist and science communicator Mario Picazo as master of ceremonies.
The first session will explore, with real examples, how different destinations and administrations have addressed the effects of overtourism, analyzing its impact on citizens, businesses, and governments. Speakers will include Glenn Mandziuk (World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance), Agnes Pierce (AMADEUS), Xavier Font Urgell (Government of Catalonia), and Aránzazu Urbina Álvarez (Government of Madrid). The session will be moderated by Héctor Fernández Manchado, CEO of Turismo Lanzarote.
The second session will address how to strengthen the credibility of sustainability actions through effective certifications, legislation, and examples of best practices. Speakers will include Sofía Gutiérrez (UNWTO), Liisa Kokkarinen (Visit Finland), and other international experts. The session will be moderated by Patricio Azcárate Díaz de Losada, Secretary General of the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI).
The third session will focus on innovative projects and technological solutions applied to sustainability, such as artificial intelligence, Big Data, circular economy, and clean mobility credits. Confirmed speakers include Juan Torres (Microsoft), Swantje Lehnersat (Klimalink Project), and Jose Juan Lorenzo (Tourism Office of the Canary Islands).
The conference will conclude with the public reading of the New World Charter for Sustainable Tourism and the symbolic signing of the commitment by institutions and companies, reaffirming Lanzarote’s role as an international leader in responsible tourism.
