The town of Sitges, located 30 km south of Barcelona, will receive on June 8 the sustainable tourism certification "Biosphere Destination", awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute, an organization linked to UNESCO, member of the UNWTO and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This certificate is a recognition of the quality, environmental sustainability and social responsibility of Sitges as a tourist destination, an award for the work done by the sector in Sitges achieved through public-private partnerships.

The Biosphere Destination certification is based on a certification system that in addition to establishing quality and environmental criteria, includes sustainability requirements such as social responsibility, conservation of cultural property, meeting the expectations of tourists on fate and improving the quality of life of the population that welcomes tourists.

The tourism sector of the town of Sitges achieves through this certification a recognition that accredits it as the main industry locally, capable of promoting, through its crosscutting, responsible management and sustainable in economic, cultural and environmental terms of their heritage.

Among the main strengths that have led Sitges to achieve this distinction include marketing actions for the elimination of the seasonality on tourism, gastronomic promotion of Sitges, which include the km 0, and the sustainable mobility project called "Bus on request". A system that, through a call button at the holding point, modifies the routes depending on the actual needs of users, and reduces the environmental impact caused by public transport. It has also recognized the work on the beaches of the villa that have facilities for the disabled and an asset as important as the natural park of Garraf.

On Wednesday June 8 the mayor of Sitges, Mr. Miquel Forns i Fusté, will receive the plaque that accredits the certification of Sitges as a Biosphere Destination from Mr. Tomás de Azcárate Bang, President of the Responsible Tourism Institute, body granting the certification.
