Aljezur, a new Biosphere Certified destination in Portugal’s Algarve

The municipality of Aljezur, located in the heart of the Algarve, has been recognized as a Biosphere Certified destination, a milestone that reaffirms its commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Portuguese municipality of Aljezur has been officially recognized as a Biosphere Certified destination for its commitment to sustainability and the UN SDGs.

A recognition of Aljezur’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

The municipality of Aljezur, situated in the heart of the Algarve (Portugal), has been officially recognized as a Biosphere Certified Destination, an international distinction that validates its commitment to sustainable tourism and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The official certificate presentation, held on September 15, 2025, marks a decisive step for this Portuguese municipality in its pursuit of a responsible tourism model committed to preserving the natural environment, improving people’s well-being, and developing a more sustainable and resilient local economy.

The Biosphere Certified distinction is awarded after verifying that sustainable practices are being properly implemented, ensuring that the destination meets its environmental, social, and economic commitments.

Aljezur, a model of sustainable tourism in the Algarve.

Located within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, Aljezur stands out for its rugged landscapes, cliffs, and pristine beaches, as well as its strong connection with nature. Unlike other, more touristic areas of the Algarve, this municipality is committed to low-impact tourism focused on preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

Among its main attractions are its unspoiled and uncrowded beaches, ideal for surfing and direct contact with nature; its rich historical and architectural heritage, visible in the Aljezur Castle and the cobblestone streets of the old town; and its local gastronomy, featuring the famous Aljezur sweet potato, a product with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

This approach has positioned the municipality as a growing ecotourism destination, promoting mindful experiences connected to culture, well-being, and nature.

A development strategy aligned with the SDGs.

Aljezur has developed its sustainability strategy following the methodology of the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI). This tool allows destinations to measure their contribution to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through specific indicators that address areas such as environmental management, circular economy, social inclusion, and governance.

Through this system, Aljezur can assess its progress, define concrete actions, and continuously improve its positive impact on the territory.

The municipality also promotes the participation of local businesses through the Aljezur Biosphere Destination program, inviting accommodations, shops, and tourism services to join the Biosphere Sustainable system, develop their own sustainability plans, and work toward achieving the Biosphere Certified distinction.

Nature, culture, and sustainability as hallmarks of identity.

Aljezur’s tourism model is based on a balance between environmental conservation and the enhancement of local heritage. Being located within a protected area, tourism development is carried out under strict sustainability criteria, limiting overcrowding and prioritizing the regeneration of coastal and forest ecosystems.

In addition, the municipality promotes responsible consumption by supporting agricultural producers and small family businesses. This approach helps strengthen the local economy, keep traditions alive, and preserve the cultural identity of the region.

The commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the increase of rural and eco-certified accommodations that apply good practices in energy efficiency, waste management, and the promotion of conscious tourism.

A destination that inspires a more sustainable future.

Aljezur’s Biosphere Certified recognition is a guarantee of quality, transparency, and genuine commitment to sustainable tourism. This achievement not only strengthens the municipality’s position within the international community of Biosphere destinations but also serves as an inspiring example for other regions seeking to balance tourism growth with environmental protection and residents’ well-being.

From Biosphere, we congratulate the Aljezur City Council and all local stakeholders who made this achievement possible, and we encourage more businesses and institutions to join the Biosphere community, contributing to a more responsible, inclusive, and regenerative tourism model.
