Greater Victoria reaffirms its commitment to sustainability by renewing its Biosphere distinction

Greater Victoria has renewed its Biosphere Destination distinction after successfully passing an external audit that validates its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. The renewal consolidates its leadership in sustainable tourism and strengthens its position within the international network of Biosphere destinations.

Greater Victoria renews its Biosphere Destination status after a successful audit

Greater Victoria has officially renewed its Greater Victoria Biosphere Destination distinction, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and its active integration into the international community of Biosphere sustainable destinations.

This renewal follows the successful completion of a comprehensive external audit that has verified the proper implementation of sustainable practices aligned with the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The positive outcome of the process confirms the strength of the destination’s management model and its structured approach to continuous improvement.

At Biosphere, we would like to expressly congratulate the entire Destination Greater Victoria team and the community that has been built around the program for their effort, consistency, and leadership demonstrated throughout this process.

Greater Victoria Biosphere Destination: a renewed commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Biosphere Certified certification for destinations is granted after verifying that sustainable practices are implemented effectively and consistently with the commitments undertaken. This renewal represents a guarantee of compliance and an independent validation of the work carried out in sustainable tourism, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and responsible governance.

The distinction has been awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an organization that, in collaboration with SDSN Spain–REDS, has developed the Biosphere methodology for destinations. This methodology integrates a set of indicators, actions, and monitoring tools connected to each of the SDGs, making it possible to measure and evaluate the territory’s real contribution to a sustainable development model.

Since signing the Commitment Charter in 2022, Destination Greater Victoria has maintained continuous engagement with the program, renewing its certification annually as a reflection of a tourism strategy aligned with international sustainability standards.

An international benchmark in sustainable tourism in Canada.

Greater Victoria was the first urban destination in Canada to join the international network of Biosphere destinations, establishing itself as a global benchmark in sustainable tourism, cultural diversity, equity, and social responsibility.

The destination has developed multiple initiatives based on the 17 SDGs, driven through a collaborative approach that involves local businesses, institutions, and the community. This participatory model has strengthened both tourism competitiveness and the social and environmental well-being of the territory.

Successful audit and continuous improvement in sustainable tourism.

The renewal of Greater Victoria’s Biosphere certification is the result of a comprehensive analysis of the destination in accordance with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The process included the external evaluation of a structured action plan designed to ensure that sustainability initiatives are solidly integrated, continuously implemented, and regularly monitored.

The audit confirmed satisfactory results, reinforcing the destination’s international credibility and consolidating its positioning as a sustainable destination committed to the SDGs.

Recognition of Destination Greater Victoria’s leadership.

At Biosphere, we celebrate this renewal and congratulate the Destination Greater Victoria team for the leadership demonstrated, the ability to coordinate with local stakeholders, and the strategic vision that has made it possible to build a community committed to sustainability.

This achievement not only highlights the work carried out to date, but also reinforces the benefits that Biosphere certification brings to the territory:

  • Greater international recognition as a sustainable destination.
  • Strengthening of reputation and tourism competitiveness.
  • Promotion of public-private collaboration.
  • Alignment with global sustainability standards.

Likewise, we hope that this renewal will serve as an incentive for a greater number of companies and local entities to join the commitment to sustainability and obtain the Biosphere Certified distinction for businesses, thereby strengthening collective impact and expanding the network of stakeholders involved in developing more responsible tourism.

Greater Victoria continues to demonstrate that sustainability, when integrated in a strategic and participatory way, becomes a driver of development, community cohesion, and international projection.

With this renewal, the destination reaffirms its commitment to a tourism model that respects community life, protects the natural environment, and moves forward with determination in its transition toward a more sustainable future.
