A benchmark space for the future of sustainable tourism.

On September 17, the island of Gran Canaria hosted a new edition of the Overbooking Gran Canaria & Hosteltur Summit, one of the most relevant events in Spain’s tourism sector, in a year especially symbolic as it marked the 50th anniversary of Turismo de Gran Canaria. With a focus on sustainability, digitalization, and innovation in tourism marketing, the event brought together professionals in tourism, communications, and destination strategy.

The event served as a meeting point to analyze the main challenges of the tourism sector and promote sustainable, responsible, and competitive solutions. Keynotes, roundtables, and expert sessions addressed critical topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence, the personalization of the tourism experience, and digital transformation.

During the day, emphasis was placed on how Gran Canaria has successfully evolved toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and regenerative tourism model that prioritizes quality over quantity. This vision has made the island a Biosphere Certified Destination, a distinction that guarantees the implementation of sustainable practices aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Active presence of Biosphere at the summit.

Biosphere actively participated in this edition with an informational booth, which became a meeting point for professionals interested in advancing toward a more conscious tourism model. Attendees and sector representatives were able to learn in detail about the Biosphere sustainability management system, a methodology that allows destinations, companies, and institutions to measure, organize, and certify their positive impact on the territory.

The Biosphere team provided an in-depth explanation of the benefits of joining the international Biosphere community of sustainable companies and destinations, how to begin the journey through the Biosphere Committed distinction, and what it means to achieve Biosphere Certified, which validates the real fulfillment of sustainability commitments across economic, environmental, and social dimensions.

Acknowledgment of collective commitment.

At Biosphere, we want to thank all the people, institutions, and professionals who visited our booth, demonstrating their interest and commitment to a more ethical and responsible tourism model. In particular, we extend our gratitude to Turismo de Gran Canaria, Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and Hosteltur for their excellent organization of this key event for the future of tourism.

The celebration of this summit not only reinforces Gran Canaria’s positioning as a sustainable destination but also sets out a clear roadmap for the rest of the sector: sustainability, innovation, and cooperation are the keys to building tourism aligned with the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
